Famous Painters and Paintings

Famous Painters and Paintings Renowned Paintings and the Masters that Rendered Them ChaptersPablo Picasso, the Artistic WolfVincent van Gogh: Not Exactly a LambThe Artist Who Tried to Not Be OneThink back to your days of studying art history: which artists and art movements featured in your curriculum?Surely you learned about the big names but what about Artemisia Gentileschi â€" unusual for being female in the male-dominated world of Italian Renaissance art? What about Paul Cezanne who was so prolific that he painted more than 1,300 canvases in his more than 40 years as an artist but didn’t sell a single one?Humans have always had a need to create art; proof is found everywhere from the Lascaux cave paintings to the images etched in stone in the highlands of Peru.Accordingly, there are/were those who would sacrifice everything from their physical well-being to their sanity for a few more brushstrokes, one more etching, one last depiction...Today, your Superprof takes an artistic turn: we look at two legendary painters at opposite ends of the art spectrum and one w ho considered himself a failure even though, in his lifetime and still today, he is considered one of the most famous artists in the history of art.Put down your gouache and come along! Such characteristics describe Picasso to a T.Born into a middle-class family in Malaga, Spain, little Pablo had as great a sense of destiny as he had a need to draw. An apocryphal story relates his first word â€" not ‘Mama’ or ‘Papa’ but ‘Pencil! Pencil!’Maybe there was a reason for young Pablo to crave the graphite instrument: his father was a museum curator and a painter of wildlife and landscape art.Still, his father must have been intent on him following in his footsteps. When the boy turned seven, his Dad started giving him lessons in drawing. He also taught his son painting techniques. So driven was Picasso (or so talented) that his work soon surpassed anything painted by his father. Picasso Sr, having by this time relocated his family to Barcelona, made use of his position at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was teaching, to secure an audition for his now teenaged son.Pablo did not disappoint. In fact, he shocked, surprised and overwhelmed the admissions board with the breadth of his experience, rare in one so young and undisciplined.Discipline was indeed a problem for Pablo. His ability to paint amazing works of art was not in question, what was missing was the capacity to take instruction and follow rules. He spent a lot of his time in Barcelona getting acquainted with decidedly non-scholarly pursuits.Pablo Picasso’s arrogant streak would dominate his life. Uncaring of critics and their sometimes stinging reviews, he would paint what he liked, as he liked and he didn’t care if anyone liked it.Once on the Parisian art scene, Pablo Picasso moved easily among the various circles, impressionist and expressionist alike. As he became more open to new ideas, including eroticism, his work took on new dimensions. It was the Demoiselles D’Avignon, a large oil on canvas representation of a bordello â€" well, the unclad occupants of a bordello that scandalised the art world. Most decried it as vulgar and ugly; even Georges Braques was repulsed yet fascinated by it.Henri Matisse, Picasso’s lifelong frenemy, rejected the work outright.Braque, a French painter who couldn’t quite get on board the fauvist movement, saw the oeuvre as a gauntlet thrown down.Picasso claimed that this work that eschewed both perspective and classical form liberated him in some fundamental way, permitting him to create an original style of art. Braque agreed. With Picasso and Braque as the fathers, the Demoiselles gave birth to Cubism, a seemingly discordant art movement that ended, some say mercifully, in the late 1920s. Vincent van Gogh repeatedly painted his self portrait because he had no money for models Image by Gerd Altmann from PixabayVincent van Gogh: Not Exactly a LambAt the other end of the ‘vainglorious and cocksure’ spectrum, we find the haunting story of a man dragged into being an artist by destiny.Born into a devoutly religious family, this Dutch painter failed to make any positive impression on the art world until after his death. Indeed, he initially didn’t see himself as having any future in art; he came to the discipline accidentally.Vincent was a quiet child who liked to draw; his mother gently encouraged him but by no means treated him as the prodigy Picasso’s parents cultivated.Looking over events in Vincent’s early life, it is easy to recognise several destabilising elements:an emotionally distant parentliving in close proximity to a grave with his name on it (and being repeatedly brought to said grave)being the oldest childbeing sent to a boarding school far from hom ebeing mentally illAll of this resulted in a socially awkward person who, by all accounts, suffered rejection at every turn â€" romantically, professionally, religiously and socially.Vincent van Gogh offers a cautionary tale of ‘fake it till you make it’.First as an art dealer and then a missionary; as a teacher, a suitor and a painter, narratives all tell the same story: Vincent started out enthusiastic and energetic but things soon went awry. He would find fault with the plan, the process or the person imposing on him, the net result being rejection, again and again.Vincent had three saving graces: his brother Theo, the comfort he found in people (women) at the lower end of social ranks and painting. It was art that finally provided him with an outlet for self-expression.Virtually untrained in everything from wielding a brush to mixing colours, the last 10 years of Vincent van Gogh’s life were nothing if not productive: he turned out more than 900 impressionistic canvases.Un able to afford models, he painted the people and scenes around him. As his madness grew and he was confined to an institution, he painted what he saw out of his window. The more people shunned him, the more he turned to his brushwork.Unlike the self-assured Picasso who was certain his destiny was painting (whether that destiny was shaped by his parents’ wishes is a moot point), Vincent’s lifelong struggle was for mere acceptance. This might lead you to think that, had their paths actually crossed, a wolf like Picasso would chew up and spit out a craven creature such as van Gogh but the truth is that the Spanish artist was in awe of the Dutch post-impressionist painter.Another incomplete thought: Vincent van Gogh was not as meek as his need for acceptance would seem to make him. Quite a few people turned away from him because of his unpleasantness and, at times, his raging temper.Paul Cezanne, his contemporary, knew all about those raging fits. So did Paul Gauguin, who was stridin g away from him when he cut his ear lobe off. Leonardo da Vinci tops the list of famous painters even though he hardly thought of himself as one Image by Free-Photos from PixabayThe Artist Who Tried to Not Be OneFrom the painter who embraced his destiny to the one who struggled to find his, we now travel about 450 years back in time, to a period when being a painter was absolutely the best job anyone could have. The circumstances surrounding Leonardo da Vinci’s arrival in the world were certainly not auspicious; being illegitimate held certain stigmas, especially in Italy, the seat of Catholicism.Leonardo knew nothing of all of this; he was shielded from the worst society could heap on a person by being treated like every other legally-begotten child. He lived in his father’s house â€" a man of good social standing, received the requisite education and, when the time came, was apprenticed to a local artist’s workshop.Teenage Leonardo was both handsome and talented; it is commonly accepted that he posed for several works and also that he lent a hand with some of his mentor’s paintings. He learned how to draw and paint alongside Botticelli, Perugino and other great names of the Early Renaissance period.Did you know that only Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, rivals the Mona Lisa in fame?It wasn’t long before word got out about da Vinci’s extraordinary painting skills; soon he was dodging commissions left and right â€" meaning that he would accept the commission, start working on it and get distracted, leaving the work incomplete.Still, there were a few paintings that he did not shirk from, among them:The Annunciation (Uffizi Gallery), oil and tempera on poplarMadonna and the Carnation (Munich), oil and tempera on poplarThe Adoration of the Magi (Uffizi Gallery), oil on woodLady with Ermine (National Museum of Art, Kraków), oil on walnutThe two most famous paintings of da Vinci’s bear special mention. The Last Supper was commissioned by his patron, the Duke o f Sforza, to adorn the newly-built refectory on his compound. As he was living in the duke’s court, he could not neglect this assignment lest the duke expel him.Perhaps the most famous painting in the world is the Mona Lisa. This painting too was a commission, given him by a relatively wealthy client at a time when Leonardo was a free agent â€" not a member of any court. Keen to build up his bankroll, he accepted the job but then neglected it in favour of other projects â€" map-making, weapons design and engineering.Strangely enough, while all of Italy was throwing commissions at Leonardo, he mentioned his ability to paint almost as an afterthought. He preferred to bill himself as an engineer a cartographer; two functions he fulfilled brilliantly.Yet, as his life waned, he thought himself a failure in spite of the impact he would have on the painting world for centuries to come. In his last months, he put the final touches to his magnum opus, his Mona Lisa, expressing regret at hav ing squandered his great talent for art.Mona Lisa now hangs out at the Louvre museum, smiling her enigmatic smile, knowing that his dying thoughts were off the mark.Picasso gave us Guernica and a whole range of artworks; van Gogh left behind Starry Night, self-portraits and sunflowers; some of the world's most expensive paintings â€" ironic because he only sold one work in his lifetime.Leonardo da Vinci, who billed himself as anything but a painter, not only left behind remarkable insights into his mind but also his visions of the future... and two of the world's most famous works of art.Now learn about the father of impressionism...

Online Maths Tuition The Best Way To Improve

Online Maths Tuition The Best Way To Improve Improve Your Numeracy Skills with Online Maths Lessons ChaptersCombining Offline And Online Maths CoursesFind an Online Maths Tutor with SuperprofAdverts for Maths Tuition OnlineEducational Support Through Online Maths LessonsOptions For Adults Seeking Help With Maths OnlineMaths! Probability, calculus, statistics, percentile, formulas, square roots, exponential functions, logarithms,...  the list goes on.Maybe the very mention of these mathematical theorum makes you tremble with fear, but with the right support and some motivation, you too can become a true mathematician! All you need is good guidance: a teacher who knows how to adapt their methods according to your learning style and has some good quality resources. It's a winning combination! The world wide web is full of ways to get maths assignment help and get your maths mojo back, including free online maths courses and one to one maths lessons with an online tutor via a free online classroom.Whether you're preparing for an important maths exam or looking to brush up on your math sk ills, there's a website for you.To lend you a hand, we have provided details on the types of courses available to adults no longer in compulsory education, and how you might be able to fund them. We've also listed the top maths websites offering the best online tutoring, to help you get by when you do decide on a course that suits you and your aspirations for the future., which means that they are officially  recognised in multiple countries.Upon enrolment, your tutor will most likely meet with you and give you a start date and tell you how many hours of lessons you will be given in given a week, with the expectation that you will undertake further independent study in your own time. Many colleges offer case studies and other useful information about their courses, like how you can apply, on their websites.Although with a course like the above, you will not be learning from a tutor all day every day as you would do if you were a fifteen-year-old at school, in reality, you are not mi ssing a huge amount of teacher/pupil time. You, as a mature student, are expected to understand that you must work independently if you are to succeed on the course and really make the most of your time in class (no yawning at the back of the class, please!). This means, for some, hiring the help of an online tutor or looking for helpful resources on the Internet to get you by.Part-time study is particularly useful for those in work or those with families as they can attend group study sessions in the evenings and arrange 121s with their tutor at a time that is convenient for them both. Even better, if you have a home student status, the tuition and qualification are often free (as mentioned above).Full-time courses are equally available, and you can apply for student loans to cover the cost of these (however you will be expected to pay up front for things that don't come under the tuition, like textbooks and any mathematical equipment you might need).Independent StudyRemember, it i s also possible for adults to enter exams as private students. To do so, you must find a school or college who is able to take you for exams and give information to the examinations officer. This will include your name and contact details, which units or awards you wish to enter for and your Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI), among other things.Although, as a private student, it is up to you to carry out independent study or find private tuition all by yourself, the school which has accepted you has a responsibility to forward details of your entry to the exam board, keep you informed of exam timetables, tell you where exams will take place, define coursework deadlines, dispatch any completed coursework to the examiner and indicate where you collect your results from and when. While this method of self-teaching can save you in course fees, it is still recommended that you hire a tutor to guide you through the course, scheduling lessons and revision sessions and teaching you vital exa m techniques in order to help you achieve a high grade (and not make it a complete waste of time). When you consider that the course could be free or cost you very little, it doesn't seem worth the hassle of taking this route and not accepting the help of the government scheme. You are better off signing up for an online course or enrolling at college, as then you know where you stand and you can be guided through the process, leaving it up to you to think about nothing else but the work and effort you put into learning. How To Enrol On And Pay For Math TutoringAs aforementioned, adult students can either enrol for a course with a specified start date or alternatively sign up to a flexible course 365 days a year, regardless of when the semester starts. When you register your interest, you may be required to submit your existing qualifications, to check that you qualify for the course.Consult your chosen place of study’s website or admission team for more information on getting start ed on the course. There is a vast range of grants and bursaries on offer by the government to support adult learners and, in some cases, you may not be required to pay these back. In addition, if you are a parent, you may be entitled to help with childcare costs whilst you are enrolled on a course of study. The government may be happy to pay towards upskilling people in the UK, but they draw a line at paying for private tuition. That, however, isn't too much of a problem, as you will see below. Many private math tutors are much more affordable than you'd expect, and there now ways to ensure that you aren't going to be ripped off by a scammer after you've parted with your money, like using an agency that vets its tutors.Find an Online Maths Tutor with SuperprofMaybe we're biased, but Superprof is a go-to if you're looking for someone to help you understand trigonometry, algebra, differential equations or anything under the umbrella of maths for that matter. With Superprof, you can find a n online maths tutors and resources for all levels of study. And rest assured that all our tutors' qualifications are verified and approved before they begin teaching with us, so you're in safe, qualified and competent hands! There are over 4,200 online maths tutors on Superprof, so you're sure to find someone to teach you primary, GCSE, A Level or even university level maths.Maths (both online and face to face) is the most widely available subject on Superprof, with over 300 face to face tutors in the London area alone. Why use a private tutor? It may seem like an extravagance, especially if you think you're getting on just fine without the extra help in math, but having a private tutor to help you with some of your learning can be useful for all pupils, no matter their level or natural ability in maths.Teachers are quite restricted by the curriculum which means that they only have so much time to dedicate to each module and therefore can't help students in need as much as they'd like to. This means that, in order to keep up with the rest of the class, these slower students must work super hard in their spare time to catch up and be in with a chance of following the subsequent lessons. But it isn't just these struggling pupils who can benefit from an online tutor. Even those at the top of the class can use extra tuition to their advantage, by gaining confidence and thus secure even higher grades. Plus, it takes some of the stress and effort away from planning your own revision schedule if there is someone able to tailor revision sessions for you.The average hourly rate for online math tutoring is just £18.It's also worth noting that many Superprof tutors offer their tutoring services in person as well as via webcam. This means that if you find a maths tutor you like in your area, you can meet them for a face-to-face lesson. Equally, if you usually have math lessons at home and either you or your tutor is away, you can still have your usual lesson via webcam.Supe rprof is Europe's largest tutoring network and has over 1 million tutors world wide. This means you can choose from tutors all over the world to help you.Find a tutor to suit your needs on Superprof, the global tutoring network ¦ source: SuperprofSo let's have a look at one of our tutors.Marius is an engineering student who provides tutoring services in maths  and sciences up to undergraduate level. He has a 5-star rating from his students, and a 100% satisfaction guarantee, firm proof of his teaching talents. His profile has all you need to know about his background and teaching style:Subjects taught: Mathematics, Physics: Mechanics, Electricity, Thermodynamics, Computer science (Certificate assistant programmer), English (Certificate of Advanced English Cambridge, EU equivalent level C1-C2) History and Geography (Participation in many national contests). After the first 2 months of tutoring I intend to raise the average of the subject taught by at least 2 points and make the studen t relatively autonomous and able to efficiently operate with the newly acquired knowledgeMarius delivers his maths revision lessons in person and via Skype and offers the first session free as a diagnostic assessment.Of course, there are many more tutors to choose from with varying backgrounds, teaching methods and levels of experience which means you are bound to find someone who works well with you and can meet your needs and expectations concerning your achievement in the subject. You'll also notice that the hourly rate can differ from person to person, which is usually an indication of how many years they have been in the job or how much training and expertise they possess. If you place emphasis on true hard facts and evidence, then you may wish to look at those in a higher price bracket yet, if you are more interested in getting the chemistry right and finding a good working relationship, then  the  price may not even come into the equation.Whether you're looking for a refresher course or intensive sessions for maths revision GCSE or A Level maths, the internet is a fantastic place to find the ideal, and often best value tutor for you. However, don't forget to consider both sides of the coin. What qualifications does the tutor hold?Do they have a degree? How much tutoring experience do they have?Do they offer online lessons?Another important factor is how you organise your tuition. When you find a tutor through an advert (without help from an agency or similar organisation) it's up to you to arrange how and when you will meet or Skype with them, and discuss swapping phone numbers to talk and share files on WhatsApp, for example. Some popular advertising websites where you may find tutors include Freeads, Gumtree, Facebook, and craigslist UK.The advantage to this is that you won't be paying an intermediary organisation to put you in touch with a tutor since you are contacting them directly.Miss out the middle man and contact your educator directly ¦ source: Vi sualhunt - uncoolbobOn the other hand, going it alone can make it more difficult to find an appropriately qualified tutor to meet your needs as information about their educational background and experience is not always available. If you choose to find a tutor through websites such as Superprof, you can rest assured that all tutors have had their qualifications checked and see how their previous students rate them.Educational Support Through Online Maths LessonsBBC BitesizeBBC Bitesize Maths is an ideal website for those who want to supplement their formal education as well as GCSE maths students looking for free math revision material  in the run-up to their exams. The website includes resources sorted by school year and topic, so learners can access step-by-step guides as well as video tutorials for their specific maths curriculum. The Different Voice Types

The Different Voice Types What Are the Different Tessiture? ChaptersWhat Are the Different Types of Female Voice? What Are the Different Types of Male Voice? How Do You Find Out Your Voice Type? What Can You Sing with Your Type of Voice?“He who sings frightens away his ills.” - Miguel De CervantesSinging is a popular pastime in the UK and it’s a great way to create social bonds. Many celebrities have made a career out of singing. However, most people in the UK are amateurs. We sing in our cars, around the home, in the shower, or at parties with our friends. In short, everybody sings and some are even familiar with their tessitura. So what are the different types of voices?Let’s have a little look at exactly what the larynx is capable of and what a vocal range is, the different types of female voice, male voice, and voice types within these distinctions. There are different tessiture and you’re probably aware of the difference between a falsetto and a really deep voice. Here are some singing lessons you will be happy you took for your improvement. Each female singer can be classified by their voice type. (Source: 12019)As a reminder, tessitura is the range of notes, from the highest to the lowest, that a person can comfortably sing without straining their vocal cords. For women, there are four main tessiture. The deepest voices are contralto. Examples include Cher, Judy Garland, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, and Amy Winehouse. This type of voice is useful for getting started with slower and gentler music. The alto is just above the contralto and is the equivalent to a countertenor for men. It’s often thought to be a “natural” voice and very melodic. In the higher range of voices, we find the mezzo-soprano voice, which is quite common amongst female singers. These voices are good for a lot of songs and famous examples include Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Madonna, Rihanna, and Barbra Streisand. Finally, the soprano is the most common voice for women and children. This is the highest tessitura and is useful for both contemporar y music and classics. Julie Andrews, Sarah Brightman, and Mariah Carey are all sopranos. There are also three subcategories of feminine voice that allows us to better classify their voice type not just by the vocal range of the chest voice and head voice but also by their vocal timbre:LightLyricDramaticKnowing your voice type will also help you to audition for the right roles in musicals, for example. What Are the Different Types of Male Voice?Just like with female voices, there are different categories of male voice. Just like female singers, men are also classified by their vocal range. (Source: thekaleidoscope)Bass is the lowest of the male ranges.Baritone corresponds with a typical spoken range.Tenor is the next range up.Countertenor is close to the female contralto voice.Similarly, there are subcategories of male voice according to their heaviness.  For example, there’s basso profondo, basso cantante, dramatic high bass, etc.The same is true for baritone, where you can find bass-baritone, which is more powerful than your basic baritone. In general, this is usually the range of bad guys in opera and musicals.Tenors have subdivisions such as lyric tenor, spinto tenor, and leggero tenor. In short, the male tessiture include a wide range of voices and it’s never a bad idea to learn what yours is.Remember that if you want to sing you also need to protect your voice. Mastery of your voice will help you sing without straining. If you feel some resistance or trouble breathing, it may mean your vo ice is tired and you’ll be more likely to hit the wrong notes. There's nothing worse than listening to someone try to hit a high note and fail but this doesn't mean that they're not a great singer. It might just mean that they don't know their voice range, need to work on their vocal technique, or even could do with a good vocal warm-up. Voice training can help with all this. How Do You Find Out Your Voice Type? Now that you know a bit about the different types of voices, you need to know what type you have. You’ll want to sing songs that match your voice. You should know that you can’t choose the type of voice that you have. There are a few ways to work out your vocal range and voice type. (Source: StockSnap)Of course, your voice, vocal cords, larynx, and diaphragm all play a part. This is why you shouldn’t put unnecessary stress on your voice and tire it.  Make sure you have a good posture, breathe with your diaphragm, and articulate your vowels and consonants. To find out what type of voice you have and to sing like a professional, there are three main techniques:Practise singing along to artists whose tessitura you know and see if you’re comfortable with it.Test your voice; see what the lowest and highest notes you can make are. You can use apps and websites to help you. There are also vocal exercises to help you understand your voice type and, ultimately, improve your voice. There are also online tools  that can help!Spend an hour with a vocal coach, such as those available on Superprof, or vocal training to find out what your tessitura is.Knowing your tessitura will help you sing well without tir ing as much. What Can You Sing with Your Type of Voice?“Some days there won't be a song in your heart. Sing anyway.” - Emory AustinNow that you’re aware of the different voice types, you need to find out the repertoire for your voice.  So while breathing and posture are important, certain types of music are more suitable for certain voices than others. Singing according to your voice type will help you get the most out of your voice whether its contemporary music or opera. Once you know your voice type, it'll be easier to work out the best songs for you to sing. (Source: quimuns)To find the best music to sing along to, the best idea is to practise! Listen to more and more music and adapt your ear to certain sounds. Over time, you’ll find what your voice is best suited to.The middle tessiture (tenors or baritones, for example) will probably have a bigger repertoire to choose from while the upper and lower ranges will have to find more specific songs for their voice.  Whatever your voice type, it’s important that you hit the right notes. It’s harder to hit the right notes if you’ve chosen the wrong song!Being aware of your strengths and weaknesses will help you to know whether you've picked a song where you can hit the high notes, whether your vocal folds will respond well to certain voice lessons, and which voice exercises are right for which vocal registers. You can also learn more about registers from a singing coach or tutor. They can even sho w you artists with the same tessitura as you. Again, a tutor can help you work out the best repertoire. If you'd like to learn more about singing, consider getting help from one of the talented tutors on Superprof. There are three main types of singing tutorial and voice coaching and each type has several advantages and disadvantages so what's right for one student may not be right for another. In face-to-face tutorials, there's just you and the tutor. This means that the tutor can focus on helping you to improve your voice and will put together a bespoke programme for you to follow. These are usually the most costly type of private tutorials since you're paying for all the tutor's time both in and out of class but they're also the most cost-effective.There are also online tutorials where the student is taught via webcam. Since the tutor doesn't have to travel to their lessons and can schedule more lessons per week, these tend to cost less per hour than face-to-face tutorials. Since t he tutor isn't in the room there with you, these tutorials are better for academic subjects rather than vocational ones. If you both have a good microphone and a good internet connection, online tutorials are a great way to learn how to sing on a budget. Finally, there are also tutors offering group tutorials. If you and a group of friends are interested in learning how to sing, you could hire a tutor together and divide the cost of the tutor's time. Of course, you won't get as much individual attention from your singing coach as you would in the other types of tutorials but you will pay less per hour per student. No matter which type of singing coach you go for, they'll be able to help you work out your voice type, plan singing lessons near me that can help you improve your voice, and suggest songs and activities that work best with your tessitura.

The Art of Prioritization Helping Children Manage Their Homework Time Effectively

The Art of Prioritization Helping Children Manage Their Homework Time Effectively When children move into middle school and high school, it becomes more important than ever to manage their time effectively. With multiple subjects and teachers, it can become burdensome to keep track of everything and many children struggle at homework time with where to begin. While a solid time management system is critical, to keep homework time moving along, your child needs to master the art of prioritization. This helps you save time by identifying tasks that deserve immediate attention, those that are important but less pressing, and those that can be considered long-term to-dos. How can you help your child become an expert at prioritizing and getting things accomplished more quickly? Here are several tips: Keep a running master to-do list. Each night, your child should review his or her list of tasks for all classes, separated by subject. This list should contain any to-dos for this week, next week or further out, including nightly homework and upcoming tests, quizzes and projects. Put due dates next to each task. Make sure your child keeps tabs on what homework is due the following day and what is not due until later in the week or the following week. Every item on the master to-do list should have a due date next to it. Designate levels of importance. Before diving into homework, your child should rank all tasks. You might encourage him or her to use A, B and C levels of importance. For example, on Monday, a math test, a vocabulary assignment due, and chapter to read by Tuesday would be A priorities, whereas assignments due Wednesday would be considered B priorities, and anything due Thursday, Friday, or the following week C priorities. Divide up the A priorities. Once your child has the A list in front of him or her, its time to quickly decide in what order things need to be completed. A good rule of thumb is to focus on the most difficult tasks earlier in the evening, but each child is different. If your child prefers to check off easier tasks before digging into the more challenging or time-consuming ones, thats fine as well. When it comes to B priorities, your child should include the top one or two in his or her nightly homework list. A test on Friday, for example, deserves some study time on Tuesday and Wednesday and should be bumped up to an A priority on Thursday night. Embrace the student planner. Prioritizing is meant to help your child use his or her time wisely. Its an exercise best tackled with a calendar or planner on hand, because most children have more than just school on their plates. For example, if your child has a heavy night of extracurricular activities on Tuesday, he or she should account for that in his list of Monday night homework priorities. Make sure your child blocks out time for activities in the calendar so he or she has an accurate picture of how much time is available for homework and studying each evening. When your child masters the art of prioritization, you will discover that homework time is smoother and offers fewer opportunities to get sidetracked or stalled on less important tasks. Teach your child to embrace this consistent approach to getting started on homework each night and you will notice him or her taking ownership, staying on top of the multitude of demands that school has, and feeling less stressed overall. 5 Practices To Deal With Stress and Anxiety

5 Practices To Deal With Stress and Anxiety Photo Credit: philly.com 1. Give Yourself 5 Minutes to Freak Out.  Let your stress and anxiety take the drivers seat for five minutes. Exaggerate them, make them worse, add more than you initially had, etc. Think of the worst case scenario and then send it into shark-infested waters in your mind. It may help to vent to a friend about your worries rather than just talking to yourself. Then, after exactly five minutes, take a step back. Mentally put all that craziness and chaos into a small box and seal it tight. Think of it as a package you got by mistake and imagine writing in permanent marker in all caps RETURN TO SENDER before picturing yourself dropping it off at a FedEx or UPS store and walking out. You know whats in that box, you dont want whats in that box, and youre getting rid of it. You are in control and youve sent all those stresses and anxieties away. 2. Get Some Exercise.  Yoga, jogging, biking, and other exercises all  release endorphins, which trigger happier feelings in your body and help energize you and give you a mental boost. So when you need to deal with stress or anxiety, taking a break to exercise will ultimately help you be more productive and positive as the chemicals released give you a runners high. Exercising will also help get you out of your own head and let you take a break from thinking for a while so you can focus on whatever activity youre doing. Photo Credit: goodrelaxation.com 3. Take a Minute to Breathe. When youre tense and stressed, you often hold your breath. Taking a minute to breathe and just focus on your breathing is a great practice to help you calm yourself and get your mind in a clearer and better place. Think only of your breath going in and out, and bring your mind and breath together in unity. If your mind starts to wander, dont let it. For one minute, focus only on your breathing and listen to yourself breathe. You are alive, you are vital, you are human, and you can do this. 4. Make Your Problems Smaller. When you think of everything you have to do or are worried about, they seem insurmountable and impossible. Think of your tasks and worries one at a time and try to conquer them one at a time, thereby making your overall stresses and anxiety-inducers smaller. It may also help to take a step back and get some perspective think about others in the world and their problems. This practice isnt meant to dismiss yours or belittle them, but rather make you think about your issues in the grand scheme of things and help you understand that they are things you can do and accomplish and arent impossible. 5. Relax. If youre having trouble dealing with your stress and anxieties, give yourself a break and take some time to relax. Whether you find it relaxing to sit and watch TV, to cook, to work out, to look at pictures of cute puppies, or something else, let yourself have some me-time. Your troubles and worries will still be waiting once your relaxation time is over but your mind will be in a better place to process and deal with your stress and anxiety and some time not thinking about your problems may help you see them in a new way. Life can be stressful but hopefully by using some of these practices you can reduce and deal with stress and anxiety when you feel them and better enjoy your time at school.

The Kid with a Kid Goes to College

The Kid with a Kid Goes to College I became a single parent in my 40s. I would have to say it was the hardest and loneliest thing Ive ever done. My daughter was ten when she moved in with me and we really didnt know each other very well. Her mother and I split up when she was three. There was a long road of work ahead for us. But I am grateful for it now. While attempting to raise a child with all the limit setting and rite of passage a young girl goes through, along with dental and doctor appointments, I could see that I needed to get into some interest for myself, to keep my sanity. One afternoon I stopped by the counselors office at Santa Monica City College. I just happened to get this incredibly enthusiastic woman whom I could see; her main goal in life was to get students into college.  By the time I left her office I was enrolled in music 101 and a beginning computer class. Not too heavy right? I barely got out of high school 25 years earlier. One of the things I liked about community or junior college was that the ages of the students varied, ranging from 19 to 50 years or older. So I didnt stand out too much. With the exception of some of the higher math course, it was fun and gave me some personal goal setting. Because every parent knows, when you become a parent there are many times you have no life, other than being a parent. Its just how it goes. And you know what, Im not even complaining. I am quite sure it is the most important job I have ever had. Of course the greatest thing about community college is the prices. I never really thought I would last long enough to transfer to a university. I figured at my age I would just get an AA degree and thats that. However when you do life one day at a time and one class at a time things can really pile up, as far as experience goes. I really enjoyed being there and the campus was not small yet not huge either, so getting around was very doable for me. Also most of the instructors I had were very good and some tried to make their course fun. As I went along taking two or three classes a semester the day came when my counselor called me in and said “it’s time for you to transfer to a university”. No! I am not ready for that. I really loved this school and frankly was a little scared to move out on to a big school campus. But the counselor insisted. So I started the process of applying for UC’s and Cal State’s around my area. Now the thing I missed most about community college were the size, the help and understanding, and the price. At the time I was transferring, universities were close to ten times the price of the local junior college. So I would encourage anyone on a tight budget (meaning most of us) to get your entire prerequisite out of the way first. As far as advanced transfer classes, I remember this one higher math course. I was barley passing and one day the teacher asked us if anyone was interested in extra credit and if so they should see him after class. Well that was for me alright. I needed a grade bump. What I had to do for extra credit was to grade several of his classes midterm exams. It took me all weekend and when I brought them to the instructor I really thought I had messed up. He asked me how I messed up. I told him half of these students didn’t pass the exam. He said that’s about right. Wow intermediate Algebra. This is where tutoring comes in.   All those students had to take the class over again or change majors, which I’ve heard many have. But not me, whether it was physics, advanced math courses, like differential equations, discrete math, linear algebra or numerical analysis, I got through every challenging class because I used a tutor. I encourage everyone to look into tutoring to make sure they pass or even to improve their grade point average. The Kid with a Kid Goes to College I became a single parent in my 40s.
